Daido Steel Co., Ltd. (President: Takeshi Ishiguro) has developed a surface mount device (SMD) "MED7P14-SMF-1" with a red point source LED having high optical output power 5.7mW (at If=20mA) of the world's best level. We start sale from December.
This product is a red point source LED with 650nm of wavelength (product name: MED7P14) sealed with transparent resin. It contributes to high mounting productivity, downsizing of various modules, high-density mounting, and energy saving in photoelectric sensors and optical encoders, keeping high accuracy and resolution.
By providing a form that is easier for customers to adopt, we aim to expand applications to factory automation, robots, 3D sensing, etc., that demand expansion is anticipated.

1.Background

Unlike general LEDs for lighting, our point source LEDs have a point-form light emitting, so the beam angle through the lens can be small. While general LEDs used for lighting and display applications emit from the entire surface of the chip, point source LEDs emit only from a minute light emission window.

General LEDs and Point source LEDs

This feature is suitable for the sensor light sources such as photoelectric sensors and optical encoders, and has contributed to higher precision, higher resolution, and longer life of industrial equipment.
Previously, we provided them with point source LED chips or CAN packages. However many of the electronic components currently in use are surface mount devices (SMDs), which contributes to downsizing and mounting productivity.In the point source LED, the needs to surface mount device (SMDs) is also increasing.
